Delivery

Your Obstetrician, in conjunction with your Diabetes Educator and Physician will discuss with you when they feel it would be best to deliver your baby and what type of delivery they recommend. If your antenatal and diabetic progress has been straightforward then you can expect to go into labor as normal.

If your diabetes has been treated with insulin, the doctor will begin a glucose and insulin infusion at the start of your labor and blood glucose levels will be monitored throughout. Once your baby is born, his or her blood glucose will be tested. Occasionally babies of mothers with diabetes have a low blood sugar and so your baby may need an early feed. Your baby will stay with you and all your other post-natal care will be the same as any other new mother's.
