If you are Ill

Don't forget that when you are ill, particularly if you have a temperature, your blood glucose will rise even if you do not eat. If you are ill, CONTACT YOUR PHYSICIAN RIGHT AWAY FOR HELP. Controlling your blood glucose is more difficult when you are ill and your physician will be able to properly advise you.

Remember that, if your diabetes is being treated with insulin, you MUST eat and you MUST keep taking your injections. If you cannot face solid food, try:

High blood glucose

High blood glucose is not good for your baby so try to avoid it as much as possible. If your levels begin to rise, telephone your clinic as soon as you can. The staff will help you to bring the level down.

Morning sickness

Like all moms-to-be, you may suffer from morning sickness. (Although it is called morning sickness it may happen at any time of the day.) Some women find that eating crackers or cookies or sucking a sugar-free mint before getting up in the morning can help to prevent nausea. Other ideas include identifying and avoiding foods which you find upset your stomach and trying not to become over-tired.  Even if you cannot eat properly or are experiencing sickness, you still need to eat and take your insulin. Try some of the ideas above. If your morning sickness is particularly severe and you really cannot keep anything down, you may need to come into hospital for a short period. When you have been pregnant for about sixteen weeks, your morning sickness will probably subside.
